Why fat is essential? 

Some dietary fats such as saturated fats need to be strictly limited as they carry health risks. Others like the poly-unsaturated fatty acids omega 3 and 6 are essential for good health.  These important nutrients play a role in the health of the skin and hair quality, support cardiovascular health, impact on hormone balance and some are involved in the development of the brain and nervous system in the baby and allow the brain cells to function and communicate. The World Health Organization recommends a minimum intake for omega 3 fatty acids of 0.5 – 2% of the daily energy intake.

Sources of essential fats 
Plant foods including seeds and nuts provide us with the omega 3 and 6 parent fatty acids Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and Linoleic Acid (LA). These fatty acids cannot be made by the body and need to come from the diet.  The body then converts them to the important fatty acids (‘super fats’): gamma linolenic acid (GLA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  Fish oil contains EPA and DHA which the fish have produced from the algae they eat. However, fish oil is not environmentally sustainable and the seas are becoming increasingly polluted.
